How Do You Say “Thank You”?

I have had a fairly successful career in Office Furniture over the past 27 years, the last 24 as the owner of my own business. If you have read my cover sheet, I have completed projects ranging from the World’s largest continuous Trading Floor for Morgan Stanley & Co, to a corporate Fitness Center to Home Box Office and a Computer Lab for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals and just about everything in between.

If you are a fan of this site, you have seen the many improvements and upgrades we have made to our website. It is our hope that when our economy emerges from the current recession, many of my competitors will have failed. And those companies either formed during the recession or ramping up after; will be looking for someone like us to assist them.

During those 27 years I have never done any Government business. When I refer to Government business that is everything from GSA for Federal programs, all the way down to local municipalities; purchasing through a State buying contract. The main reason for our shunning this kind of business quite frankly was the very low profit on the effort put forth.

Well this Summer I was contact by a school on the West Side of Manhattan looking to rework their conference room into a Resource Center. Not to drop any names but you can already see I shamelessly do, they are associated with John Jay College. So I make the trek into the City and meet with them for 90 minutes. I explain to them that “our advice is free!” No believers there.

To make a long story short, we made the delivery on Election Day, saving them an overtime delivery charge. They ordered two 10’ tables and 24 chairs, spending way more than they had planned or budgeted. When it was completed, The Director peeled off $30 and gave a ten to each of my installers and tried to slip one into my hand. I tried to explain, “I’m the owner, I don’t get tipped.” I was told to please keep it because they knew I was not going to be fully compensated for the time and effort I had put forth and they wanted me to know how much they appreciated what I had done.

This was the second time I had been “tipped” since I waited tables in College. I haven’t been paid yet through the State program; I hope the ten dollars does not represent 15% of what I earned. Hey if you are a government or municipality buyer and you need some help, give me a call. It is like buying a Saturn, there is no quibbling about pricing for you at The Irishmen on the Hudson!

Yeah I have a Cheap Chair for Your Cheap Arse!

If I had a buck for every time I’ve heard someone ask me “you know I was at one of those Super Stores this weekend and I saw this really nice chair for $69, do you have anything cheaper?” Yeah, how about sitting on a milk crate?

I was reading my November issue of Consumers Reports and am a regular reader of their safety alerts. What do I find? “Office chairs break, causing falls.” It seems one of those Super Stores “is recalling about 216,000 of their chairs because the back and base post could break, causing the user to fall and suffer an injury. The company, working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, says it has received 35 reports of such incidents, which resulted in 15 cases of injury, including cuts, bruises and concussions.

The recall involves two task chairs. They were sold at the company’s stores nationwide and on its Web site, in catalogs, and through direct sales to businesses from September 2003 to July 2008 for under $65!

People, we’re talking about something you are intimately involved with for over 8 hours a day. You are worth it. Spend a couple of hundred dollars once on yourself, your head and back will love you for it!

Increasing Your Productivity by Using the Right Chair

As you start thinking about putting together your new office, it is important to consider how much space you have and how much each worker will need to complete their daily assignments successfully. After that square footage has been determined, it would be a good idea to figure out which of your existing furniture is worth keeping.

Unless a desk chair is under two years old, you should probably get rid of it. Buying a quality office chair may be one of the smartest investments you will make! Your ROI will far outweigh your investment.

What was once an 8 hour workday is now becoming more like a 10 hour workday! How many hours are you at your desk, sitting in your chair? Do you get to spend that kind of time in bed? How much is a good night sleep worth and could you see spending $300 on a bed? Of course not! Like it or not, whatever you’re sitting in or sleeping on has a measurable impact on your work experience.

It has been my experience that the difference between a really great chair and the cheap stuff found on internet shopping cart sites is enormous. We have a saying in this business, Yes we have a cheap chair for your cheap Ass! Cheap chairs really suck.

Perhaps I have become pampered but in over 25 years; I have never sat in a single, good inexpensive office chair. A quality chair is so comfortable that it simply becomes part of you and allows you to focus on your work. On the other hand, a cheap chair is uncomfortable and simply reminds you how many hours of work you have left.

I have seen so many people sitting on chairs that are practically falling apart. How they try to balance themselves while attempting to put together a spread sheet for a presentation boggles my mind. How many people have you seen with chair “pillows” on the backs of their office chairs? This is just an attempt to add some lumbar support to their crappy chairs they have been unfortunate to get.

Do the proper thing and get a chair for your employees that won’t break your budget, but gives you enormous value for the money invested. The perfect office task chair will come with adjustable arms, pneumatic height adjustment chair lift, locking tilt mechanism, adjustable back height with lumbar support, and at least a seven year warranty. A really good quality office chair can last you up to ten years & is an investment worth every penny.

If you want to optimize the productivity of your employees, don’t take for granted the importance of matching the right chair to the right person. If your employees are comfortable, they will enjoy what they are doing more and therefore become more productive at work.
